BRIGHT EYES
BOWERY BALLROOM
NYC
“Um, here’s another song…I think,” mumbled a clearly intoxicated Conor Oberst to a patiently quiet crowd. It was a telling moment; some laughed, others frowned, but most just waited expectantly as the prodigy uncorked another bottle of red wine. This was a far cry from the stunningly orchestrated Bright Eyes I had witnessed just months previous at Irving Plaza, although I suppose that was the intended point. As their sole U.S. date after a grueling European tour, the Saddle Creek-heavy lineup seemed weary and eager to switch things up.
Performing much of the set solo, Oberst was clearly in need of some time off. His waif thin frame clad in a black suit, the musician at times resembled one of those Living Dead dolls sold at Hot Topic. Old school fans were rewarded for their tolerance of extended tuning and forgotten lyrics with rare offerings, including several tracks from Letting off the Happiness. Some new songs reared their heads as well, including a lovelorn duet with one of his female backing members that had most of the female fans wringing their hands with jealousy.
Tossing in a solid rendition of “A Song to Pass the Time” from Fevers & Mirrors, Oberst eventually brought out his thirteen member entourage for some encore material off of his latest album. While ending on a high note, it seemed as though Oberst was treacherously close to burning out before his time. Get some rest Conor, and while you’re at it, eat a sandwich.
