Get to Know Us
Having remained 100% independent for over a decade of publication, Altercation Press has become one of the underground music scene's premier sources for cutting-edge interviews, insightful reviews and exquisite, energy-capturing photography.
Altercation was initiated by Donna and Justin Habersaat in New York in 1999. Frustrated by the lack of substantial media coverage of the punk and indie music scene they loved, the pair was determined to provide a new, unfiltered outlet for artistic bands and musicians. With a focus on substance-heavy content and dynamic live performance imagery, Altercation quickly rose from a regional periodical to an internationally distributed and critically acclaimed magazine.
At Altercation, we strive to cover artists that have both molded the foundation of independent music as well as helped push the form ever forward. Our passion for the energy encapsulated by live performance shines through in our deep and ever-expanding library of photography. From the Pixies' Frank Black to punk rock icon Joan Jett, from living legend Tom Waits to the fiercely confrontational Henry Rollins Band, Donna's rare entry into independent rock's inner circle has resulted in some truly captivating imagery.
Additionally, Justin's insightful and thought-provoking interviews have garnered him access to a wide array of artists the likes of Billy Idol, the Flaming Lips, Sleater-Kinney and Social Distortion. Substance-driven and chock full of historical details, Altercation's stellar reputation for in-depth conversations with legends of the music scene is second to none.
