CASKET ARCHITECTS

The term ‘power trio’ usually calls to mind instant imagery – manic pop songs, cliquey groups in matching outfits…you know the drill. How about searing guitar chops, wildly flailing limbs and a maniacally awesome female drummer? Enter Warwick, New York’s Casket Architects. Comprised of bassist Evan Schlomann, guitarist/vocalist Mike Shaw and drummer Annie Terror, the group has been turning heads and dropping jaws with a stage show well worthy of their constant Black Flag comparisons.

“Evan and I have been playing together for the last six years in various bands,” explains Shaw. “We formed like all the others, during a late night caffeinated conversation about music.”

Originally conceived as a foursome under the name the Night Terrors, the band quickly shed both their original drummer and moniker.

“Once Annie joined on guitar, we knew that we were finally playing with someone who added to our ideas rather than pull away from them,” says Shaw. “Once our drummer left, it only felt natural to continue on as a three piece with Annie switching to percussion. It was the first band I’ve been in where every member was 100% about the band and the music behind it.”

“In our first year of playing as the Night Terrors, we ran into a lot of bands with the same name,” continues the guitarist. “We knew we’d have to change it to avoid any future confusion. The new album was originally titled Casket Architecture, so it was easy enough to convert the name.”

With their lineup and new name secure, the band has maintained a solid touring schedule, somehow finding time to record an album slated to be released on Glacial Records in June 2005.

“Glacial is a new label with a lot of spirit behind it,” enthuses Shaw. “It’s a tight knit family right now between the bands and the people involved. They’re working really hard to make sure the bands get the promotion they need.”

While the band points to groups like the Melvins, Mr. Bungle and Throbbing Gristle for inspiration, the group’s talent truly defies classification in the best sense.

“By this point in our songwriting,” laughs Shaw, “it feels like Greg Ginn raping Frank Zappa.”
