X: Still Burning
Taking to the stage on a surprisingly cool spring Texas evening, west coast punk pioneers X proved quickly that some things just get better with age. The band wasted little time in making their presence known, as co-vocalists Jon Doe and Exene Cerveneka harmonized perfectly on classics like "Los Angeles". For a group creeping well into their 50's, X's energy was an impressive sight to behold' from the effortless chemistry of their singers to the Joker-in-training gleeful grin of their guitarist, the band were obviously in their element.
Despite some absurdly cautious security guards (any crowd movement garnered a quick flashlight beam in the face, leading to a truly hilarious slow-motion mosh pit at one point), the audience gave as much as it got at this energy-filled performance. By the time the group encored with "The World's A Mess" the separation between crowd and band blurred, as close to a thousand voices chimed in unison "...it's in my kiss" like it was 1984 all over again, which, for one night at least, it was.
